French at Pucklechurch

Curriculum intent

At Pucklechurch we aim for children to develop an interest in learning another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children to be curious about the language and hope to deepen their understanding of the world around them. We believe it is necessary for children to learn a foreign language to enable them to be a member of an ever-changing, multi-cultural society. We want children to be exposed to a different language to enable them to build confidence within themselves and also tolerance and respect for other cultures. The teaching of languages teaches children the foundation knowledge that is needed for learn further languages, as well as giving them the skills needed to study and work in other countries further down the line.

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources;
    • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation;
    • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures they have learnt;
    • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Curriculum implementation

In KS2, children are taught French by their class teacher. This will include lessons where they will learn to speak, understand and write basic French. They will learn vocabulary relating to themselves and their lives and will hold conversations reflecting everyday situations. They will also find out about the customs, traditions and everyday life in French speaking countries.

Children are exposed to the French language throughout the day, from taking the register in the morning, to listening to instructions in French throughout the school day.
